In the fall of 2022, I was interviewed for a National Geographic channel series, Rewind the 90s. The interview focused on The X-Files, the concomitant rise of the Internet, and the experience of discovering, simultaneously, a groundbreaking show and a worldwide community of friends. The series drops in August, on the Nat Geo channel. After August 30, you can catch it on the Disney+ channel. My segment will be broadcast on August 8, in episode 4, “Future Shock”.
It was great getting to reminisce about the show, the fans, the excitement of those days. Younger viewers, who grew up with the Internet, don’t know how exhilarating it was to not just get caught up in a show, but be able to discuss it immediately after an episode aired, with people from all over the world. Those intense, global discussions morphed into reviews, which I posted to alt.tv.x-files and the Delphi X-Files forums. The reviews led to a call from Chris Carter, that led to my researching and co-writing the first three Official Guides, and so on from there. Safe to say, The X-Files changed my life.
