Some of you may remember the Renegade Legion series of science fiction based games from FASA, which came out in the 1990s. Budgie Smuggler Games (I love the name!) is planning a new rollout of the games, starting with Renegade Legion: Centurion. The game pits the 69th century Terran Overlord Government (TOG) against an alliance of humans and aliens called the Commonwealth.
So where do I come in? Right at the beginning! I joined nine other writers to create stories set in the Renegade Legion universe, introducing new characters, planets, weapons, races and scenarios to get readers and players up to speed on the new universe. And what a universe it is! Hundreds of solar systems, dozens of races, and enough storylines to keep a writer busy for the next hundred years. My story, “Refuge”, will be found in the first anthology, Voices of Varuna, now available in paperback and e-book.
I had a lot of fun writing “Refuge”. It’s fun to build a world from scratch, and even more when you get to share ideas, worlds, languages and in-jokes with nine other outstanding writers. There’s a little something for everyone, from straight-up military SF to love stories to Imperial botanists facing exile for their politics. Check it out.
One thing to note: the actual game is not out yet. Thanks to COVID and a lot of supply-chain issues, the Patreon crowdfunding campaign has had to be delayed for a few months. But that doesn’t mean you can’t join the Legion; just pick up Voices of Varuna and settle in!
